I guess its because you can still donate money to the game. I read somewhere here on itch if you dissable payments your game shows up again. But im not 100% sure if its correct.
I believe you are correct about this, I checked few games that separated their free editions from paid, giving each their own page, and only the free ones without payment option can be found with search.

You may find out you may download and play the latest update before some second tier subscribers of some name games and some p2p are free on another site that devs upload their games on. Even some games that look dead here could have been completed on another site. So do use your search engine on every game you like (adult game “Name of game”) hope this helps you.😜
